Installing a Unicode font with IPA characters

Installing a Unicode font will enable you to type IPA characters on this site, display them in your word processor, and add them to your printed documents. Two good Unicode fonts with IPA characters are Doulos SIL from SIL International and Lucida Sans Unicode from Microsoft. Lucida Sans Unicode is included with Microsoft Office.

The following steps are necessary to download Doulos SIL and install it on your Windows system:

1. Go to the font's download page.
2. Scroll down to the "Font Download" section and use the download link.
3. Open the .zip file you downloaded and unzip the file Doulos SIL Regular.ttf into a folder of your choice.
4. Open the Control Panel, and then open the Fonts folder.
5. Copy the file Doulos SIL Regular.ttf into the Fonts folder (e.g. by dragging).
6. The font is now installed!
